The Accounting Department:

The Accounting department is the financial nerve center of the company, maintaining accurate records, monitoring transactions, and preparing financial statements.

The Career Opportunity:
The Assistant Controller will play a pivotal role in managing the accounting operations of the company. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for overseeing the accounting team, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, and supporting the VP in various financial reporting and analysis tasks. Experience in a SaaS company is essential to understand the unique financial and operational aspects of our business.

The position is based in San Diego, CA with a hybrid work schedule (3 days per week in office).

Areas of Accountability:
The Assistant Controller has responsibility for the following outcomes:
  • Financial Management: Oversee daily accounting operations, including cash & treasury, expense management, payroll, accounts payable and general ledger.
    • Support the Controller to Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.
    • Support the Controller in Preparation and review of monthly financial statements, reconciliations and supporting documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
      • Specifically manage the following:
        • Financial close calendar for trial balance related items
        • Oversight and review of all balance sheet reconciliations monthly
        • Bad debt reserve calculations
        • Coordinate with the Revenue Team to ensure proper revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606 and other relevant standards specific to SaaS.
    • Manage banking transaction flow and set up
      • Post and prepare for release of daily batches
      • Manage sweeps and overnight deposits
      • Assist in preparation of cash flow analysis and forecasts
      • Assist in lender / debt compliance
    • Ensure expenses are recorded accurately (correct values to correct accounts) and accruals are correctly maintained
    • Ensure payroll is accurately posted, recorded and maintained
  • Team Leadership: The Assistant Controller will manage and mentor a team of accountants and staff, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional growth.
  • Internal Controls: Monitor and assess financial processes and procedures, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Audit and Compliance: Coordinate and support internal and external audits and ensure timely and accurate completion of audit requests and findings.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Generate and analyze financial reports and support the VP, Finance and Accounting in preparing management reports and presentations.

Competencies for Success:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a SaaS company is required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Saas metrics and KPIs, such as ARR, MRR, churn rate, and customer lifetime value.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.

At PracticeTek we carefully consider a wide range of compensation factors to determine our offers of employment. This includes internal and external market factors as well as your individual experience and skills. These considerations can cause compensation to vary but we reasonably expect to pay between $115,000 - $165,000 for this position.
